Course Code: SGH6
Course Duration: 20 hours (minimum, self paced study, commonly 2 to 8 weeks, less or longer as you need)
Pruning is an essential skill required by gardeners and horticulturalists. There are many different reasons to prune, and there are many different ways to approach pruning. Pruning benefits some plants immensely. Other plants, however, may be negatively affected by pruning.
This short course explains how plant growth and pruning are intertwined. It provides instruction on how to prune a range of ornamental plants as well as important fruit species. Students will learn how to assess the pruning needs of plants and learn about good pruning practices. Furthermore, you’ll learn how to encourage fruiting and flowering, how to create topiary and espaliers, and how to make bonsai. Upon completion you will feel confident in your knowledge of how and when to prune all sorts of plants.
Good pruning practices can also enhance the environment around us and help plants to withstand the ravages of climate change by removing wind-damaged, dead and diseased shoots, assisting plants to cope with stressors like extreme heat, and reducing the risk of plants becoming diseased or attacked by pests.
