Getting a Green Job

Green jobs are booming.   Green jobs are jobs are jobs that help to preserve or restore the environment.

You don’t need high level qualifications. You just need passion for the environment, coupled with some knowledge and experience. There are so many different ways to learn anything you need to know and get the experience required.

The aim of green jobs is to –

  • Reduce the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Minimise pollution and waste.
  • Restore and protect nature and ecosystems.
  • Promote and develop sustainability within different sectors, helping businesses and society to become more sustainable. For example, sustainability managers working in different businesses.
  • Roles that involve helping communities to adapt to the impact of climate change.

It is estimated that there are 14 million green jobs worldwide today, but this is expected to increase to 23 million new jobs by 2030.

There is an increased demand for people to work in green jobs, even while jobs in other sectors are on the downturn. If you are interested in moving into a green job, there could not be a better time.

What skills do you need to get a green job?

Many people assume that to get a green job, you need specialist academic qualifications, but that simply isn’t true. You don’t need to have a degree to work in this fascinating and rewarding sector. The green job economy is currently seeking workers with a range of practical skills and different backgrounds. 

If you are looking to get a green job, consider –

Transferable Skills

Your work experience and knowledge may be very useful in the green sector, more useful than specific degrees or qualifications. These transferable skills can be of particular use in green jobs.

For example –

  • Construction workers may have experience that can be easily transitioned into green construction work.
  • Retail workers and people with good sales skills can use their people skills working for environmental organisations and green energy companies.
  • Technical workers may have useful skills in explaining and installing products, such as solar installations.
  • There is increasing demand for logistics skills in the green section to develop sustainable supply chains, environmental compliance and experience in solar energy.

Soft Skills

Soft skills matter.  A 2024 report sound that sustainability professions consider soft skills more important than technical skills when looking to recruit new staff.

Soft skills include safety awareness, teamwork, adaptability and good communication skills.

Good team players are essential to promote the success of any green project.  Being adaptable and resilient is also important, as is the ability to reflect, set boundaries and show empathy.

A knowledge and understanding of health and safety are also important within the green sector.

Green careers are available to many people regarding of their academic background. A degree is definitely not essential.

There is a wide range of green jobs, with a range of different specialisms. There is something for everyone!

The way to start on a “green work” career path is the same as any other career path.

1st 

Learn more to build both your knowledge and awareness: first through study

2nd

Develop your learning further through experience. Initially this doesn’t need to be a paid job. Many successful careers begin with volunteering.

3rd 

Build you networking. Attend events, join organisations, interact with people who work in green industries.

4th

Create an impressive resume, and add to the resume as you build your knowledge and experience

There are many places you can start. Don’t overthink it. If you have a passion and desire to succeed, you already have the most important attribute to succeed.
